any ideas, please help

i was driving down the road and i heard a grinding noise, subsequently the truck was not in gear any more. i put the truck in park and tried to shift back into drive. the only gear that would engage was first. once driving in first gear, i was able to shift back into reqular drive. power was once again lost when i was trying to park. i dont know what kind of problem this is and really have no idea. any help or suggestions is greatly appreciated.

Does it seem that the transmission is popping out of gear or just not shifting?

For starters, even if you don't have a "check engine" light on, you might want to pull the codes or have them pulled. This will help pinpoint the trouble spot without a lot of chasing things that MIGHT be the problem. Could be something as simple as a bad VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) or a malfunctioning MLPS (Manual Lever Positioning Sensor). But these would still only be "guesses". The computer will tell you via the codes what, if any problems exist with these sensors and many others. I know it sounds odd to look here first but it often saves a lot of time and wasted effort/money repairing or replacing things that COULD be the problem.

Your 96 will require a code reader for OBD-II computers.

For sure do as greystreak has suggested and pray that it is as simple as a sensor.

alright, i got the codes pulled and they said noting about any of (for lack of my knowledge) the stuff that has to do with my problem. however it did pull the p0401 code again. so i think i need to check the egr sensor, (i just got a new egr valve). so i cleared my head. read more of the book and decided to look under the floor mat to see if something had fallen off. a screw was under the mat. im guessing, because of the hole, it was from where two parts of the shift linkage mechanism connect... since there is an additional screw it still works, just not correctly... so as soon as i can find one of the 6pointed screw heads, i will be able to put it back in.... thanks for the advise... and it looks like ill be able to buy the manual hubs for this winter like i wanted... now i just need to decided between the warns or mile markers, any suggestions.

OK, yeah, that would definitley be a good reason for the problem.
