2000 F350 PSD - ABS light came on yesterday - anyone have any advice for troubleshooting or what part(s) might be bad? Is this a common failure - 112k mi on it.
Doesn't necessarily flash the OD light, but it may make the cruise control shut off and the speedo may dance.
If it is the speed sensor it is extremely easy to replace. However, with your miles, it may be worthwhile to change the diff fluid too. Sometimes the speed sensors chews up the part inside the diff that makes it work and leaves junk in the fluid. With 112K miles it is probably time anyway.
Doesn't that sensor also cause the OverDrive light to flash? My OD light is not flashing.

i havent really heard that, the VSS and ABS light is a common problem on ford trucks (ranger, explorer, f150 f250 ect.). the OD light normally senses transmission problems. the transmission does use info from the VSS so i guess it could set the OD light as well, but the VSS can still be bad and not set the OD light

Thanks for the info guys - I'll pick up a new VSS and give it a try. Cruise does seem to be surging a tad where normally it is rock solid - speedo is ok. In the interim, I guess I'll check the connector and maybe remove it and clean it. Good advice on the fluids - they should be replaced even though they are synthetic - did the tranny already.
For the record, from what I've read the last few years about this subject:
The VSS may light the ABS light, flash the O/D light, and/or make the speedo jumpy.
That's right, one, two or all three symptoms may show up, or not.
My theory on it goes like this:
The ABS will detect even one "tooth" missing (or a better way to explain, one "pulse") from the VSS
The tranny will deal with it fine until the speedo starts to jump (which might not even be detectable to the human eye) and then the O/D light MIGHT come on.
The speedo won't jump until there is a drastic loss of pulses from the VSS.
