Has anyone converted a 3/4 ton truck rear end to a dually rear end? Let me tell yall what I am doing.Ihave got a 460/c6 out of a 1976 f150,3/4 ton disc brake frontend from 78 f250,3/4 ton rearend from a 66 3/4 ton truck and am putting all this under a 66 f100 shortbed.I want to end up with a 1966 dual wheeled shortbed pickup.
I think it can be done, but some things to watch out for is the width of the rear axel, so inside dual dosen't rub on springs, and also rear brake drum diameter, some single wheel diffs use bigger brake drums. Keep us posted, its a project I was thinking of doing with a 78 F250.
you have to change the lug bolts to longer bolts. if you have the big brakes a 1 ton wheel will not fit over the drum. if you have the small brakes, a chv.{sorry} wheel will fit . a ford wheel will not fit over any of the 3/4 ton hubs. clearence at the spring is minimal but ok as long as you dont use too big of a tire. the web sites for duals all sell a spacer and stud adaptors. they will work as long as you follow the instructions and keep them tight. oughta be an awsome truck when you get finished!
A friend of mine gave me 6 16.5 dually rims with almost new tires.THe rims will not fit over the rearhub as was mentioned.Has anyone ever cut the centers larger on these rims?THey came off of a chevy.Would I get into safety issues by doing this and can it be done with a plasma cutter. As for the front I was told if I could find an old ford dually with disc fronts the hubs would bolt to the 3/4 ton front spindles and I could run the matching dual on the front. Thanks
I would not cut those Chevy dually rims, I believe you would weaken them by cutting with heat, just contact Arrowcraft and tell them what you've got, and they should be able to fix you up, with strong, safe adaptors for front and rear.
I wouldn't use chevy wheels because they are hub centric and not stud centric like Ford and Dodge wheels are if you are gonna use dually wheels get ones off of a Ford or a Dodge. Chevs bolt pattern is also different Chev wheels will only fit a Chev truck Dodge and Ford are the same because they both used Dana axles in these old trucks.
Chev wheels use a flat ring that goes over the wheel studs that has the has the tapered holes for the lug nuts to seat against if you don't have the plate the lug nuts don't work because the wheels are not drilled for taper head nuts. Anyhow its beside the point I wouldn't use 16.5 wheels either tire selection sucks because not many manufacturers make 8.25R-16.5.
Look here www.accuridecorp.com and they will tell you what will fit.
thanks for the info everybody.I am checking with some of the companies reccomended to see what they can do.I agree about the 16.5 rims but they are free with almost new tires.and that would give me time to get 16'' rims and tires! I have friends who think i am crazy for trying this but if it works the "cool" factor would be unreal?!!!
