I just finished replacing my calipers and cylinders on my 85 F-350. I also repacked the bearings while I was at it.
While driving around, it sounds like a jet engine whining between the speeds of 45-60. It's noisiest in the cab at about 55 and sounds like it's coming from the wheels. Does this sound like the bearings?.
I'm not too much of an idiot and know you need wheel bearing grease for...wheel bearings. But, I am seriously questioning the grease that I used.
It was Castrol (and I am pretty sure it said 'wheel bearing' on the tub) grease in a tub. It was yellowish - is this the right stuff?? The thing is, it looked like it was liquifying in the outside heat of about 100 - that just doesn't seem right.
It would never hurt, and wouldn't take too much time to repack them with wheel bearing grease. Even if you used the wrong grease I think it would take quite a bit of time before it started making noise. I would also rotate the tires and see if the noise moves to the rear, one of them may be making the noise.
