A longer stroke engine will rev faster, and make torque a lot quicker. This is due to the fact that the piston has to cover more distance, in the same time.

no it will rev slower as it has more recrocating mass, and greater inertia in the crankshaft.

Actually I'm pretty certain that the longer stroke engines do rev slower. Because of the reason you stated. They DO have more distance to cover.(the pistons) But they don't have to do it in the same time, they take more time to cover the additional distance, thereby revving slower.

What the 2 above me said.

Longer stroke equals more low end torque, and reving slower.

I think I had piston speed, and engine RPM mixed up. A long stroke, short rod engine will make more low end torque.

From my experience with the SBC and SBF, the 302 SBF will walk all over the SBC 305. Maybe I was just against a driver who didn't know how to launch a car or something, but the most either motor had done to it was a edelbrock carb and headers, and he still lost. The 305 was out of a Monte Carlo that we transplated into his cutlass, and had a 600 edelbrock and short headers, and I was in a bone-stock F150 with a 302 in it, and he had nothing. Any way you look at it, I would rather pay for a SBF than have the SBC given to me. I think after this winter tho, things will be different w/the cutlass tho, totall rebuild on the motor.

Sure this post is dead now but i thought i'd put some input

Now i'm a Ford person and so is most of my family, but saying one is better over the other is kinda pointless. They both have the pros and cons and both are very good engines. I have an 1985 Blazer K5 with the 305 and though it is heavy and not very agile, it can keep up with my 95 mustang GT(with just intake, headers, and ignition upgrades). I'm not saying it can beat it but its right behind it. Sure your saying so what! I'n my opinion thats pretty good with a full size SUV with a Small Block keeping up with a sports car. The 305 is a good baseline offroad engine for a truck that produces respectible numbers.(Answering someone's question)Why they put the 305 in the suburban is becasue it's just a 4 door full size blazer and i believe the 305 was the stock option(someone told me they had v6's)but you also had the option of a 350 and the suburban(not sure about blazer) had the option of up to a 454. I'm not saying in anyway that chevy engines are better than fords or Fords are better than Chevy becasue what one lacks design, durability, power, what ever you have it, the other makes up for. For example the design of the late model 302's are known for easily cracking under high torque high horsepower uses, the chevy 305 being more durable can handle the power. But Ford's In my opinion are easier to work on and upgrade parts. I hate to admit it but Chevy guys have been dominating the racing scene. One thing I'll say is we're having a come back(can you say 5.0 cammer?) With the new mustang taking over the racing scene from Scca races to Drifting to Drag Racing and the fall of the Camaro we're back on top(and hopefully) staying there for years to come
