Got My New Superior Wheel In Today From Black Cloud Diesal.
Anyway, Thought I Would Go Ahead And Get Started With The Install Tonite And Finish Up Tomorrow. After Removing The Intake Tubing And Exposing The Old Compressor Wheel, I Went Ahead And Checked For Play. There Was No In And Out Play At All But There Was A Very Very Small Amount Of Side To Side Play. Not Enough To Touch The Housing But It Was There. The Wheel Does Spin Freely But I Was Concerned About The Side To Side Play.
Is Some Play Normal. Is This Play Ok As Long As It Does Not Contact Housing.
I was told a small amount of axial play is ok, like .005-.007 or less and a small amount of up/down, left/right was ok, as long as it doesn't touch the housing, cuz the lube oil will take care of this when it is running.
Does anyone know what the turbo sounds like when the bearings start to go bad? I notice when I get up above 18 lbs. of boost, the truck sounds a little different, almost like it is really starving for air, this started with my last trip towing the RV, never heard or noticed it on previos trips, just a nice singing tone before.
i work on fleet trucks if a bearing goes bad about the only sound you might here would be a metal rubbing sound and you will have oil coming out the exaust and also going in your intake tube it makes a big mess at least that is what it does on the cat ,cummins and detroit diesels
If you can feel play, and the correct play is infact .005-.007 inch, I really do not believe that you be able to feel that little bit. 5-7 Thounsandths is basically a human hair. Do you have a depthgauge that you can rig to the housing to see the actual movement? The oil will infact take out a lot of the axial movement be creating a hydraulic type pressure fit whic is actually want you need for it not to burn up. I would double check the actuall allowabe axial movement and get a depth gaug and magnetic mount to check it.
Well, Went Ahead And Put The New Wheel In Today.
I Did It With The Turbo On The Engine (without Removing It) And It Was A B..ch. .....a Lot Of Climbing Up On The Truck And Straining While Bent Over On My Knees And Belly. But Anyway, I Got Er Done. The Shaft Still Has The Tiny Bit Of Play In It But Since It Was Not Touching The Housing, I Hope It Will Be Ok. I Do Believe It Moves More Than The Thickness Of A Human Hair But I Do Not Have A Gauge To Accurately Check It.
It Sounds Great (the Wine)........it Does Not Have The Bad Sound Of Turbo Stall Or Flutter Or Whatever When It Shifts From 3rd To Overdrive While Getting On It Like It Used To Do. It Seems To Produce More Boost Pressure At Lower Rpm's...... Also, I Was Getting A Bad Back Pressure Sound When I Would Get On It And Release The Pedal Back To Idle At Slow Speeds (like In A Parking Lot) (goosing It ). I Still Get This Sound But It Does Not Seem As Bad Or Loud. It Bugs Me A Little. Sounds Like Darth Vader Exhaling Or Gaging On Something. Overall,, I Think I Am Pleased With The Wheel. ( Only Took It On One Test Drive So Far ).
I Was Hoping To Get Rid Of The Darth Vader Sound Also.
Does Anyone Else Get This Sound While Goosing The Engine And Releasing At Slow Speeds ???????
That sound is your Back Pressure Valve. Does it only do it when it is cold? You may want to re-adjust the BPV or eliminate it all together. It is very restrctive, but definetly helps warm the engine up during cold weather operation. I installed alot of banks~~~ Wow............. What a difference!
