One more ZF5/6 question

I can't seem to find a definitive answer about what transmissions will mount up to my 6.9L diesel. Did International change the bell housing/pilot bearing or anything between the model years?

I found a rebuilt ZF5 for a good price, and may have a lead on a ZF6, but don't know if they will bolt up to the 6.9L engine.

I have actually gotten kind of used to the C6, but even when new it had to be a comprimise the way they did the vacumm trick to get it to shift.

The ZF5 does bolt up. Same bolt pattern on the bellhousing, same input shaft diameter and spline count, same pilot bearing spigot diameter. You WILL have to shorten the driveshaft. Also, make sure that the clutch slave cylinder mounts OUTSIDE the bellhousing. Do a search for zf5; lot of good posts from senior members about what to expect on this swap. It's a swap that makes a lot of sense - I plan on doing it this Christmas when I replace the clutch.

87 model year had a 6.9 with the ZF5, and the trans didn't change with the 7.3, nor did the block, just the bore and a few other small details. From what I understand, the powerstrokes are the same bell as well.

Interesting. Will I have to shorten the rear driveshaft and lengthen the front driveshaft on a 4x4?

No big deal, as I have a good driveshaft/axle shop down the street from where I work, just curious.

There are two ZF 5 transmissions. One is a bolt and go swap, the other is usually not.

Make sure it is a diesel transmission, the gas version will not bolt up.

The ZF 6 will bolt up, the transfer case you have now will not work with it.
The swap can be done if you swap both the transmission and transfer case.
But there is a problem with that, the speedo was driven off the transfer case in the IDI trucks. The speedo was electronic and driven off the rear axle by the time the ZF 6 was introduced. There is no place to drive your speedo off the transmission or transfer case on the ZF 6 setup.
