Engine diagnostic

Hi, I have a 97 ford explorer. Need to know whats all involved in a engine diagnostic test? I have had quotes ranging in price from 29.00 to 300.00. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Hill2523

For that money you could buy your own code reader/scanner.I've got an Autoxray EZscan 4000 it cost me $350 shipped to England. While I was looking I saw many online from as little as $50.

Diddo. I have an Autoxray myself. But I didn't have to ship it to England. Thier corporate headquarters is about 20 miles from my house. Worth it's weight in repair receipts for sure.

AdvanceAutoParts is having a sale on their Equus 3100. Not as advanced as some of the other readers here, but should give you the codes you need. If you have a hard time deciphering them, you can always post them here, of look around online. Many sites post the code definitions.

Also - Midas and Goodyear typically do a "computer diagnostic" for $85-$95. Just say you want the codes read, and no more.

I also have an Autoxray. The best place for price is E-bay. Autoxray scanners can be upgraded.

Right o - 95limited. I drove on over to Autoxray and they upgraded my unit to do OBDII. Now one scanner reads the 1993 Explorer and the 2002 Durango. Pretty cool.

Thanks for the replys. My problem is a shaky idle(rough) when sitting still. My RPM's still stay the same at idle when this happens. I have replaced the IAC just about 4 months ago. If anybody has any ideas please post them. Thanks, Hill2523

Check for codes first. That's better than guessing, for sure.

Autozone and the like can do this for free.

Then come back with said code(s).

A guy at work brought his in today for a low RPM idle. Fuel pump is bad - not enough fuel pressure. Could also be a bad regulator. I'd check that first before dropping the tank.

Really? How do you rest a PCM? All I know is you disconnect the battery. This clears all KAM - keep alive memory - all learned corection factors. These factors help compensate for worn out parts that cause the engine to run out of spec - A/F ratio an spark curve mainly.

The PCM is simply a dumb computer. It does what it is programmed to. There is no reset, OK now I'm happy now and sorry for the hickup problems button.

If you had a problem, clear KAM and the problem goes away, it will likely be relearned before 100 miles go by. Which I think is impossible anyway since correction factors worked to get your A/F ratio back to design, not to make a problem worse.
