can anyone tell where i can find a half ton truck with a 31 spline, 9 in? not specifically - but which trucks they came under. i haven't found any under small block trucks, there is a 79 ext.cab with a 400 close to me for sale, i'd but the truck and swap rears if i knew it was a 31 spline. also will a bronco rear fit under my 79 as long as it is a 77-79? thanks for any help - if anyone can tell me where to look to decode the door tag that would also be a big help.
Thanks - 460FORD (new paint-true blue; lightning color)
Most of the 73 to 79 4x4 trucks came with 31 spine axles, its easy to check just jack up one side and pull the axle out and count the splines, as for the broncos they also should have 31 and are wide enough as long as it is a 78-79.
thanks for the replies, the info will help. i pulled several axles from 302 trucks and all of them were 28 spline. maybe i'm just having bad luck. i have another 79 i didn't check because i just figured it was a 28 because the truck was a 302. can i put 31 spline axles in a 28 spline rear? just change the bearing? my truck has a dana - i think, i never heard anything good about the little danas is it worth keeping? which trucks would have trac.loks. if any?
thanks again
I'm not for sure if the housing tubes are different or not as far as axles go . I do know that the 31 spline axles are a bigger diameter at the spline end.
If the 9" rearend still has the tag on it, where it shows the ratio it will tell you. Say it has a 2.75 gear, an open rearend will say
2 75 on it. A traction lock will say 2 L 75. L= limited slip. This will help without pulling the hoghead out to see it it is a posi or not.
