87 Ranger runs rough when being worked

My 87 ranger with a 2.9 has had a problem off and on. When I work the truck going up large passes or have a big head wind on the freeway in the 75mph section it starts to lose power like i hit a big gust of headwind. Its been so bad before that Ive had to pull off the road since I have no power. Now some history of my truck:

I just swapped out my engine about 3k ago for a rebuilt evergreen motor, 2.9 stock rebuilt. I also put a new fuel pump in about 1 year ago (the frame rail one). I have read that fuel pumps can be the cause of this problem. Is it a safe bet its my in tank pump? I have not checked fuel pressure and dont think i have a way i can do this at this time. It does run fine most other times (other than every now and then when its cold out I have some idle issues...read that this could be a bad DPFE sensor...does my truck have this and where would it be...never heard of it and cant find it in the manual.) I pull the codes periodically...the only code I have gotten recently is a bad neutral switch (which on a previous post i was told not to worry about it since I have a manula tranny). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated...this problem is getting old.

Your truck doesn't have a DPFE.

Since this seems to happen under a heavier load, do you have any cooling problems.

Testing the fuel pressure would be a good idea, maybe you could borrow one from a local parts store.

I ended up puting a new in tank fuel pump in the truck today when I was at my parents since I had an extra hand. It has no cooling problems at all. It actually runs cooler with the new engine, but still does it under the same conditions so I think its independent of the engine itself. We'll see if its the fuel pump. I read another post on here about a year ago saying that the fuel pump heats up and shuts off briefly...seems like something mine might be doing since if I pull over and let it take a break it doesnt do it again. Its has a newer radiator (2 years) and also a new thermostat when i put the long block in so that should not be the problem. ANy more ideas would be helpful though.

An update: The truck got driven back up to school today. The drive included 50 miles of freeway at 80mph, and 2 passes. It ran fine with the new fuel pump, so I think it fixed it.
