Distance To Empty Wacky...

Abotu a week ago, I filled the Ex's tank (ouch) and when I started the truck, the compass displayed "CAL". I did the driving in circles deal, and I thought all was will with the trip computer.

MY current average fuel economy is in the high 8s right now (in town driving) and the DTE is over 400 miles! Obviously this is way off.

I disconnected the battery and it slowly seems to rectifying itself....dropping something like 3 miles for every one travelled. According to the manual, the DTE feature averages the last 500 miles, so maybe it will take awhile for this to square itself away.

Or, is the computer toast?

Thanks!

Have you reset the computer? Press both buttons for a second in the average MPG display. Do not hold to long as it resets the compas. If you are not resting at each fillup the average MPG is way off.

Thanks Roy...and I do reset the average each time I fill.

According to the owner's manual, resetting the average will not have anything to do with the DTE. Maybe the owner's manual is wrong?

I will reset to be sure.

The theory with Miles to Empty is that the truck knows what your average is and it knows how many gallons of fuel you have. Nice theory but...

1. Your average can be off significantly from the current real world driving that you are doing, ie pulling a trailer or getting stuck in a lot of stop and go traffic.

2. Your fuel sensor in the tank can get stuck giving a false reading of how much is left to burn, I've noticed that mine will occasionally get stuck under the true fuel amount and I'm getting a fuel warning light when I still have 10 gallons left in the tank...

In short, its a neat feature but don't trust any further than you can throw your truck with one arm... Otherwise you will be calling AAA for a couple of gallons to get you to the next station.
