winch mounting question

I'm trying to mount a 12,000 lb. pull Tulsa PTO winch into a '76 Highboy (34" frame). I have to redo the winch mounting rails since there is so much scrap metal scabbed onto them. As I am laying out the new ones, what is the difference whether I bolt the winch frame onto the top of the truck frame and bolt down through the top of the truck frame, or make additional brackets and bolt them to the side of the truck frame, and bolt the winch down to the brackets? Assuming the same number of bolt holes in either scenario, the frame will be weakened by the same amount, just in different places (side vs. top). Every one of these winches I've seen mounted to a frame had brackets to mount it to the side, but I'm wondering why. I could also use all-thread and make "bolts" that run all the way through the frame vertically through holes in both the top and bottom of the truck frame. Eliminating the extra brackets would eliminate the cost and effort to make them. What do you think? Brian

winch mounting brackets

Brian, I used to be the forman of a truck shop that rigged up oilfield trucks with winches and the such. We always used plates that went down the side of the truck frame and then welded a top plate to mount the winch. It seems like we would use 6 or 8 bolts per side but, we had a big drill that was mounted to a adjustable cart that would chain to the side of the truck frame. We would also weld angle iron on the side of the plate so it would rest on the top of the truck frame wile we were doing all the drilling and the bolting. It will take a lot or work and planing to get the winch plates made, PTO installed and all of the drive line made and controls all done.
Good luck. Steven

I do know that on big truck frames you are not supposed to drill through the top or bottom rails, because it weakens the frame. you can only bolt to the sides
