what i found?

today i went and looked at a 2000 f-250 diesel lariat excutive series. had the mountings for a 5th plate, brake controller, with 96,000 miles, think they wanted $18,000 or 19,000. looked under the hood checked the oil and it was a little below add and there was oil on the valve covers and oil around the air hose right before the intercoller and on the exit side of the intercooler it was clean. what are our guys thoughts on that. By the looks of it it burns oil is that something that diesels just do out on the farm all the tractors burn a little oil especially if we are really working them hard. and my dads 90 idi uses about a quart or 2 between changes

I think i can find something better one with out any leaks but i am not real familar with this engine.

my 1997 with 200,000 doesnt burn a drop in 4000 miles. and that is towing a 24 foot gooseneck stock trailer and running 70. i would look for a truck in better shape or atleast one that is better maintained. if the oil is that low i would worry about how low it might have been allowed to get in the past and whether it was properly changed and maintained. this is just my .02 but these motors are great and should last for alot longer than 96,000. properly maintained that truck should be mechanically as sound as the day it was new. as far as the price i would not worry about that. decide what you can afford and what you want to spend. then find the truck you want. if you can get it in your price range than it is worth it if you cant than you either need to adjust your price range or find another truck. good luck and let us know.

The oil residue on the intercooler tubes is normal. There are many threads on the CCV mod. Do a search to find more information. Every engine is different, some will use some oil some will not. I wouldn't pass on this vehicle without more investigation. Have a trusted mechanic take a look at it.

Also check the Tran’s oil and smell of it, see if it smells burnt. With the 5ther, it may have towed hard. If you can, also check the turbo wheel to see if it looks damaged or dusted. Just a few other things.

I've got a 95 PSD that doesn't burn a drop between changes and I am doing 6k oil change intervals. That said, I understand what mech2161 is saying....some do, some don't. Even 2 qts. between changes is still considered normal so don't let that throw you. Check this link out for a great list of things to look for http://pages.prodigy.net/stevebaz/_i...az/index3.html
Good Luck!
