Hey everyone! I have a 2000 Ford Ranger 3.0L 4X4 and when I come to a stop and let it idle, the rpm's drop and it sounds like it is going to die! It does kill sometimes but not very often. any ideas? I have had some people tell me that it might be the idle air control valve or a vacuum leak. could it be anything else? Is there a way for me to test to see if there is a vacuum leak or how to test the valve to see if it is bad? It has never made the check engine light come on or anything like that. Thanks for your time! This website is awesome!
have you checked for any codes. You can go to autozone and they will hook up to it for free and tell you what codes if any there are. as far as finding a vacuum leak you would normally hear a vacuum leak, but, an easy way to try and find one, is get some carb clean or brake clean. Start spraying your vacuum lines. if it has a leak you will hear the RPMs go up on your truck, because of it sucking in the Cleaner. as far as checking the Idle air Valve im not sure. Never really dealt with it before. GL

You could go to the Explorer Forum at this site and click on "links for helpful information" and then click on Wolfmeister's "I.A.C. repair and testing procedure". It is for a 4.0L, but the check procedure must be similar, if not identical for every Ford I.A.C.

I just had a real similar problem with my 94 Ranger with 4.0l...the engine would shut off at nearly every red light where I had to wait more than a minute...It was worse with the AC on and somtimes cut of when I let off on the gas at all...It turns out that the MAF was sending in too much fuel through the system...which caused it to run rough and finally cut off...I had a CEL as well......I also had lowered MPG...check your oil level too...if for some reason it shows more oil than you put in, the gas may be passing thru the pistons into the crankcase which could be very bad...Autozone has an MAF for $99...my suggestion is to have the Code read...and see a mechanic, unless you solve the problem real soon
the check engine light has never come on in my truck. Today I sprayed some tb cleaner in and it seems to be idleing alot better! I also had the tranny fluid and transfer case fluid changed. My ranger only has 50,000 on it but the fluid was burnt and black. Shifts really good now! imagine that! Thanks everyone for all of your useful information!
