I just got back from the dealer after testing an 05 Frontier 4x4. I'm going to have to say I am completely unimpressed. It was quiet and drove ok but around corners the thing just plowed, oblivious to the direction that the wheel was pointing. I'm not sure what rearend they put in that thing but man that was the slowest 268hp 280lbs-ft vehicle I've ever been in. Well, up until about 4500rpms that is. Above that the thing slams you back in the seat but I don't really think thats what a truck owner is looking for...towing up a hill at redline. I was really expecting a lot more from the truck. I have driven a Ranger 4x4 with the 4.0 and the 5spd and the Ranger had wayyyyy more power down low where it needs it. When I got back to the dealer the poor sales guy had me talk to his manager and all the guy could do was point to the numbers and say best in class. I tried to give him a little low-end torque knowledge but he wasn't buying it. Oh well, I'll stick with my Ford any day (can't beat the true dual with flowmaster super40's sounds awesome!)
I had the opportunity to drive 2 different 05 Crew cab 4x2 frontiers. They were both base models but had the optional 4.0 v6 with the 6 speed manual.
Both of them had plenty of power but one thing I can say is nissan ecus are very picky when new. It seems like it takes at least 5k for them to decide what they want to do. Somthing about learning your driving habits. I know this from my 04 4cyl frontier that while new would feel very peppy one day and the next day kind of sluggish and I thought somthing was wrong with it but after about 5k it settled down. I also have a 01 f150 5.4 4x2 that I bought used so I dont know how it acted when new but my friend got a 05 5.4 and his was somwhat sluggish when new also but is really waking up since hes put some miles on it.

See you on the boards. ….
I've had 14 or 15 new vehicles (all but my F150 were company vehicles) and almost all of them felt slow and sluggish when new. Some loosened up in a couple of thousand miles and some took 12-15K (some stayed pigs, only a little better). You can't judge a vehicle with a totally green powertrain. You need to drive a demo with some miles on it.
I said the Ranger had more low end like a truck should...
I seriously don't know of too many Ranger owners with the 4.OHC engine that say is has too much (or enough) power down low. Many who upgraded from the 4.OHV engine felt the earlier engine had more grunt down low.
Honest.
Well, maybe the 3.slow truckers that are relieved to upgrade, but any engine needs revs to make power, even a 7.3L PSD.....these v6s need quite a few, and if the engine DOES have power up to 5000 revs for that matter, so be it. If said engine has 90% of its tq available from just off of idle, great. That's quite a bunch.
You have to love how when we like a brand, it's always "Don't look at the peak numbers", but when it's a hated brand, it's always, "Ewww, look at the peak power at such high rpms!" Go figure.

i dont see why everyone beats down on the 3.0 and its 150hp and 19-21mpg going 35-50mph. I drive a '99 4x4 B-3000 manual(exact same as Ranger 3.0) the 4.0 only has...what 20-30 more horses? 14-15mpg? i used to haul a 920-1200lb load in the bed once a week and i didnt notice any struggle. I just dont see why they put the Ford 7.5 rear end instead of the 8.8.

4.0 actually has 59hp and 58lb-ft. of torque more than the 3.0.
sorry i didnt know the specs on the new ones but i remember the '99 models only had something like 180hp. thanks. i still dont think its a fair trade 59horses for 3 gallons a tank
