I also put a K&N fillter in my 2000 expedition with a 4.6 engine. I did not notice anything differant at all about the truck after installing it. The MAF thing is a total myth UNLESS YOU OVER OIL your filter element when you service it, K&N warns the consumer against over-oiling filter elements.
I put a Gibson cat back on my 98 5.4 and didnt really notice a change. About a month ago I put in a K&N filter and now I can feel a difference at highway speeds. A little more passing power and slightly better gas mileage.
the problem I guess was I just went camping in WV...6 People in the truck and towed a 5x8 trailer (loaded about 2.5K pounds total, Im guessing) The slightest incline the truck really struggled...it would kick out of OD and then lose speed in 3rd gear. I guess i just expect more out of a truck with a 5.4L DOHC engine. I know the 99's made more power, I'm just saying with mine.

Seems about normal. Kicking out of overdrive is normal. What gears are you running? With 3.73's you shouldn't be struggling. My travel trailer weighs in at 4200 lbs and my 5.4/3.73 doesn't complain much.
I put a K&N filter in my 02 5.4L Expy and I didn't notice a difference at all. Mileage stayed the same with same type of driving habits.
I read somewhere (perhaps it was here on the forums) that the K&N filter doesn't flow as well as a stock paper filter until it gets dirty. Doesn't make sense to me, but then again, a lot of things don't these days!

5.4 with 3.73 gears...I have the tow package.
I understand it's normal to kick out of OD but it was still struggling in 3rd gear on some of the hills.

why would you tow in o/d up a hill are you crazy??????????????????
well add it up your entire load and trailer put you into the 10,730 gcwr curb weight 6200-gas 180 lbs people about 750 lbs extra cargo 100 lbs 5x8 trailer 1,000 lbs + 2.5k in trailer =10730. you should not have been in o/d the entire trip. even on flat roads that is to much for hte o/d.
