I was wondering if anyone has reebuilt their 3 speed on the column linkage, and if it is a matter of bushings, and such or will I most likely have to recreate much of the linkage??
Rebuilt my 55's 3 speed. About the only thing available are bushings and brass washers for the bottom links. Where the rods go int the trans levers did nothing as it would require welding and re-drilling the holes to eliminate the slop. My shift lever/linkage has alot of play, but, I will live with it.

Just rebuilt mine on my 51 a few weeks ago. Put the new bushings in the levers. Be sure when you order the new bushings that they supply the tool to install them too. The levers were in excellent shape for being so old. I replaced the rubber insulator where the shifter lever attaches to the top of the column, and found a new spring at Ace Hardware to replace the one in the top of the shift tube. Also replaced the bushings on the shift rods that connect to the tranny, which was rebuilt with all new parts. There's still a little bit of slop, but it's as close to factory condition as it could get. Just replacing the bushings on the ends of the levers and the shift rods can eliminate a lot of play if yours are shot.
One other thing I forgot to mention--if your tranny leaks any out the side plate, where it can dribble down the shift arms onto the rubber bushings on the shift rods...my last set of bushings dissolved in a fairly short time after they got soaked with transmission grease. I had to search to find a side plate that didn't have the arms welded on, but when I got one, I replaced the seals in there too.
