I am getting ready to sell my ranger and so needless to say i was pulling my good system out of it and transferring it to my explorer. When i was hooking an old cd player up the radio lost all power. How this happened was I hooked it up and it was working fine, so I went on and started to put it in it's cage. As I was pushing it in, everything on the radio all of a sudden died. So i pulled it back out and found the stock radio and started to hook it up, nothing. So I left the stock radio hooked up. When I cut on the lights, the lights on the face light up, except for the display area. Almost like the lights are on when the truck is off. I don't believe it's a fuse, and I can't find it if it is, what fuse is the radio so I can make sure i checked that one. If this isn't it, what else could it be. My idea, if not the fuse, would be something to do with the ignition wire, bc it is obviously receiving power. Thanks for ya'll help.
edit, forgot to put the year, it's a 94 XLT Ranger 5spd with premium sound.
K well let's start simple. Did you pull all your components (speakers, subs, amps, etc.) then your HU? Could be different wiring, I have had to rewire all my HUs to fit Rangers using those little adapters. The fuse I am not sure of, but if you are working on your radio you need to go ahead and pull the negative battery cable anyways, prior to ever unplugging anything.
Go grab a test light. Turn the key to ACC, and check your ignition wire. Also check the ground wire, it sounds to me like it just got shorted out somehow. After you check ignition, check the constant +12V. If you get power at both, then you know that it's not a fuse at the fuse panel.
Just thought of another thing! If a speaker lead is grounded (shorted out), sometimes your HU will get power, but it won't power up.. this could be why it's powering up with the lights, but not kicking on.
For future reference, as a safety precaution you should always remove the (-) wire from the battery when doing work. This prevents things from shorting out by you accidently touching a hot lead to a grounded part.
I always have done that, but before I pushed the radio back into the cage, i tested it to make sure it was alright, it was so i went on and pushed it in, then everything went out, never thought of a speaker lead, i'll have to check that one, we'll see friday when i have time to look it over. Thanks ya'll. been a big help here, i'll let u know how it turns out.
well, i tore into it, tested the ignition and power wire, had power, but nothing on ignition and found that one of the wires was loose in the wire harness coming from the truck, i popped that back in a little bit and it started working, then the fuse popped, so i replaced it, and now it works to perfection, wish i had known it was that easy before, i woulda fixed it sooner, lol, oh well, it's fixed now, thanks for ya'lls suggestion
