metal bonding

I took my truck to a college autobody shop and they told me I could get new panels for my PU box and they could be bonded not welded. They said they would be stronger than the rest of the truck. Any input on this? Thanks BCKID

Apprenticed in a body shop for a while, and using a two part epoxy for certain repairs was a standard practice. Usually used where the pieces are not structure related, ie part of a doorskin, box panel, that sort of thing. If there is structure related then it's better to weld.

How would epoxy be better then welding? it seems to me like a weld on a body panel would hold twice as well!

Can't give reasons why or how it's better, all I know is that the shop was using the epoxy for non structure and welding structure. Can only say that since they are still doing the weld on structured pieces then it must still be stronger. But I don know that we were seeing vehicles coming in with new damage and that previously epoxied parts were still holding through the damaged area.

As I see it there are two benefits of adhesives

No warpage of metal from heat
No gap between join for rust to start as you would have with a spot welded lap joint

I woud not use adhesives for anything structural as I dont believe it can be as strong as a weld but I have used it for non structural patches and not had a problem

Its a purpose made 2 part adhesive that is applied with a syringe type gun which mixes the adhesive as it is dispensed

3M body panel adhesive and fusor are two brands I have heard of
