I am a complete believer in doing proper repairs and not using chemicals to stall things.
There are many cooling system stop leak preparations out there. Almost all are some fearsome concoction of solid *****, ucky unctious liquids or other loathesome mixtures I would be afraid to fix a driveway crack with.
There is one I have had long term luck with on two vehicles. Cadillac aluminum engines were shipped from the factory for over 20 years with a gm tested product they call "seal tabs" they are available from any gm dealer and consist of dry tablets that dissolve and are inserted into the radiator and cause no harm. They were put into my 1982 cadillac as a warranty repair for a head gasket leak and I installed some into my 4.0 aero last month. success in both cases.
Replacing the leaking component is best, but with the difficulty of working on the aero, I tried this stuff again. If you need a stop leak product, try this stuff, less than $4.00.
I completely agree on the quick fix thing, so far this stuff works better than any I have seen and gm authorized it for'continuous use in brand new vehicles. nothing else I have ever tried worked.
Hmm, sounds good, but still, I would take it in to a shop at the nearest opportunity, but at least this could buy you time, and allow you to go about your business for the time being.
Im all for quick fixes. i have been driving my 90 aero for 2 years on bars leak.
i know maybe i will have to do head gaskets but i get a kick out of seeing how
long i can make it go without major repairs.
I think i will try those seal tabs next time.
thanks for the info
I saw this post last night, so today at work (I work in the parts dept at a Caddy/GMC/Jeep dealership) and asked our two top GM mechanics (minimum 20+ years GM experience each) And they swear by it. The seal tabs will not clog the heater core or any of the passeges like Bars, et al. They have no problem running it in their own vehicles. They said that it would not hold a head gasket long, but long enough so you have time to fix it. It is more for small radiator holes.
So FYI, next time someone has a leak, stop by your neighborhood GM dealership and pick a couple up.
