This is not meant to be a full blown Chevy Vs. Ford war page... Just an observation of mine and I am wondering if anyone else has had the same experiences. A friend of mine has a 01 Chevy diesel and I have a 05 Ford PSD. We both have chips not sure which one he has, but I run with a SuperChips. When taking off I noticed that he seems to have a LOT more power in the 1000-2000 rpm range. My truck has plenty of power, but just not the same at the lower rpm's. Any reasons for this other than the PSD is a higher reving engine? Thank for the input.
Smaller displacement.
The 7.3's had more cubes. to help them get going right off the line, whereas the 6.0 needs the turbo to spool to get it going. That plus a different tunning and programing design make our peak power come a little higher in the RPM range as opposed to Chevy's whos is lower but they ussualy fall on thier face up top as we seem to shine higher up in the rpm range.
Yeah thats right. The new 2006 duramax equipped trucks now have a redisigned motor that has a much higher red line then the old ones. The older trucks with stock tires used to rev out after about 100mph. Now they have higher rpm rating and with the allison another overdrive with the now added six speed allisons.
As for chips for the chevy and Ford, I believe the gains for a 2001 chev truck can be quite enormous. These trucks can get quite a bit more out of a chip than others. Just comparing one kind of chip (banks because it was the easiest to look up) the chev gains 385 ft-lbs of torque and 155 h.p. whereas the Ford only gains 231 ft-lbs and 138 h.p. The torque is quite a bit of difference, which could relate to more power seen at lower RPM.

so do the gas trucks. the chevies are speed limited just under 100MPH
tkondro: kind of interesting how they do state a greater hp and torque for the earlier models. I guess it is primarily due to the fact that they started out with less hp and torque.
92f15016: as for the speed limiter in a gas truck, a chip or a tuner will take care of that. the gas engines are designed to rev higher than the diesels. Or that is how it use to be, the newer diesels, Ford, Chevy or Dodge all seem to be heading for a higher RPM range to gain the extra HP and Torque.
Much of the top speed limit has to do with the speed rating of the tires. The manufacturers make sure that the top speed of the vehicle is well below the speed rating of the tires. I remember years ago that Ford was hit with a hugh judgement against them for selling a really fast car (I think it was a 68 Torino) that was capable of 130+ MPH but the factory installed tires were rated for 85. The owner of the car decided to test how fast the car would go, a tire blew out and several people were killed.
I know the 01 chevy duramax diesel used to redline at like 3300 rpm's and that was their big thing was low revving power. What is the powerstroke redline? Over 4000? That's probably the deal is the chevy's power band starts at like 1100 rpm's and craps out around 3200
ya and it is hard to get a load rated E tire that is good for 120+mph. say what you wish about the dmax, but atleast we are gaining ground at the truck pulls. i can't say that for the powerstroke. cummins reign end will come from the dmax before ford ever catches up the way it looks to me.
when powerstrokes pull they rev up, but once they start to go down they crash like a Kamscozi (sp?) pilot.
I know what your talking about. I was just a tractor pull in oregon in sept. There was a stock D-max pulling realy well. He did 2 full pulls after it rained! Not even the cummins guys were pulling well though.
