Acquired taste

I asked my friend why people drink espresso if it's so bitter and dark (darkens the teeth). "It's an acquired taste," he remarked.

All my life I've been hearing people say "It's an acquired taste,", and it got me thinking. Basically that means if you don't like something when you first taste it, you keep on putting it in your mouth until you either start liking it or get sick. That's also the dictionary definition I've found for "acquired taste".

When I put something in my mouth and it taste bad, I won't put anymore of it in my mouth. Why people like putting bad tasting things repeatedly in their mouth just for the sake of "acquired taste" is beyond me. They must say, "yuck, that was terrible. I've got to try another one".

So what's with that?

Maybe because they needed it to help them stay awake. Then I can understand that. But why decaf?

They want to be cool, I guess, so they beat themselves up to look the part.

Me, I've given up all chance of ever being cool, so I tend to no build up my "aquired taste" portion of my taste-buds.

Not quite sure. How many of us were given a taste of beer when we were kids? And how many of us truly liked the taste? And why, when we become of legal age, do we like the taste of beer? Sure, beer too is an aquired taste, but how does our taste buds change in that 10 years (for me anyway?)

I think the coffee thing is a bit different though. Lots of cream and lots of sugar is the way I started out. Now, I like it with cream only. I can see an evolution for some other people who need a stronger fix and go to straight espresso though. Me, I can't stand the stuff.

I used to hate coffee, but I started drinking black coffee just because it sure warms you up in the morning before a long day of hunting.

i dont think that aquired tastes are things that taste really bad but rather things that taste very different from anything we have had before. so it takes a little time to get used to and apperciate them. for instance i bet if you gave someone a hersey bar that has never had anything sweet in there life they would probably gag

What I thought was a bit strange was, after my first sip of beer, I didn't like it. I guess I was about 9 or 10. But when I had my first real beer, in a safe, responsible setting, about 18, I was a bit hesitant. It actually tasted pretty good, given the long hard day at work. I've been hooked ever since.

Actually, hang on a sec.

A cousin of mine introduced me to Big Rock Warthog Ale. Now that is an aquired taste. That stuff has got some bite to it. He said "here, take a sip, I won't open mine unless you decide to keep it for yourself". So, after the first sip, I almost gave it back to him, but then I took another sip, then another, before you know it, I finished off the rest of his beer, and he was stuck with the Molson Canadians I brought.

I was thinking the same thing, if a guy sits down and actually tastes a beer, it doesnt taste very good, but you acquire the taste for it after a few, probably because it gets you drunk!

My fiance was telling me wine was an aquired taste. We went to a winery last week and she was tasting several different ones and I would try them and they all tasted the same, and to me they were aweful, she loved them and commented how each as different. I'd rather have warm beer myself, in fact i think stale warm beer would be better than most of the wines I have tasted!

Now on the flipside we could be somewhere andI could have a sip of Stag, Corona, Miller, Coors, Budweiser, Natural Light or any other and they woudl all taste different, some i woudl like more than others. To her they'd all be gross.

I guess it all depends on what you have an aquired taste for!

Yea, what is an acquired taste?

My first taste of beer was when I was a youngen. I liked it.

My first taste of wine was when I was a youngen. I liked it.

My first taste of Coffee was when I was a youngen. I liked it.

My first taste of canibus sativa was when I was a youngen. I loved it.

My first taste of..................................well, you know the rest!

Acquired taste? Maybe to blend in with the in crowd.

In my opinion, the only way to acquire a taste is when your taste buds change.
