i need a new power brake booster and master cylinder. i went to O'Rieleys and they had a bunch of diffrent ones, like double piston and stuff. i dont know what kind it is. can someone tell me?
For an F250 you probably have single piston calipers. Bring in your VIN number and your GVWR rating off of your door sticker. If all else fails go to a "real" parts store like Carquest or Napa with the same info and they can help you. You may pay a little more at "real" parts stores but they have a lot of parts that O'Reilly doesn't have and the counter people are usually have more experience and knowledge. You can also pull the booster and master cylinder and bring it in to help match it up.
I highly recommend that you buy a power booster WITH a master cylinder matched to it so you can avoid problems.
I just replaced my booster and master cylinder a couple weeks ago. I got my parts from OReillys, with no problems. The new units come with lifetime warranties!!! (They know me so well there that I sometimes get small items free.) Anyway, my OReillys only offered two types of boosters for my 78 f150. One is for the single piston calipers and the other is for dual piston calipers. You should be able to see your calipers behind your front wheels fairly easily. Single piston calipers will look similar to this [0], the duals will look similar to this [00]. It makes more sense when your looking at your calipers from the inside out. I would suspect that any thing larger than a 150 would come with the dual piston calipers? Also, make sure you do use a new master cylinder with the new booster or you will void the warranty on the booster.
Whether you have dual piston calipers depends on the GVW. Dual piston calipers in 1977 come on:
F250 above 6900 GVW.
F350 4X2
E250-350
F250 4X4
This info comes from the 1977 Ford OEM manual. 78 and 79 may be different.
My F250 is 6200 GVW, single caliper, and has never stopped worth diddly:-( I am putting a GMC front end under my truck with dual piston calipers and a F350 dual diapragm power brake booster. I hope it stops better.
If you buy a master cylinder already assembled to the booster unit it should be matched properly to the booster.
THANKS cigarxtc, it has the dual calipers. i would like to find a new booster with the master cylinger already on it, but i dont thnk they make em that way, or i could be wrong.
