When driving down the road in my '75 hi-boy with my bright lights on, sometimes the lights go completely out and I can't see where I'm going.
It never happens on the low beams, but only high beam. And once I switch it back over to low beams, they start working again. It doesn't happen all the time, but too damn often. One of these days it's gonna happen going around a corner, and I don't wanna rinkle a fender. Any suggestions on what the cause is. Pulling too much juice?
In the meantime, I'm running the Aircraft runway lights for my brights.
The dimmer switch might not be bad though. I had a 73 Dodge D100 that did the same think and what I found was the dirt, moisture and rust had made for a bad ground. After I cleaned it I had no problems. Dimmer switches aren't expensive but this might be the trick.
i have had the same problem and it was the headlight switch on the dash.the problem is your lights on high beam cause the wiring to heat up and it tripps a sealed breaker in the headlight switch, the problem will eventually happen on low beam as well.i changed the switch and the problem was solved.its all do to resistance in the wiring,so make sure all the contacts at the dimmer switch, and the headlight switch are all corrosion free.this will help ,and if you replace you headlight switch,up grade to a heavyduty model.hope this helps you out. -billy
just dont drive with you high beams on, i never do anyway and i dont see much of a difference they make. its just a pain to have to turn off the highbeams every time a car comes in sight.
Flickering on and off can also be caused by a weak breaker in the headlight switch but I agree in this case it is probably the dimmer switch on the floor.
Thank you all for the recommendations/advice. I will swap out switch on floor first, and make sure the UOS is grounded good. If it continues, I'll throw in a light switch, and make sure sure all terminals are corrosion free on them as well. I'm pretty sure I've got a UOS for it too!
