I've seen a few "teathered" caps banging the stuffings out of the body going down the road flapping away.
Alas, they were all minivans though....
Hmmm, think they were distracted?
ya and i get them in saying my check engine light came on again, i'm going lemon law this time!, "gas cap off 4th time".
Got my locking cap from ford $35.00 , with dealer discount ,has the chrome cover that has ford stamped in it , that by the way hits the fuel door arm! going to try to move the filler neck down 1/8 inch , Craig.
Can you give me details on how to do this? I searched the forum and nothing came up. Thanks...

You could put a momentary micro switch on the fuel door hinge so it closes the circuit when it contacts the inner frame of the fuel tube area, meaning door open, chime or light. An alarm can be rigged using the same method.
Rat Shack has all the switches you could need.
I've seen big rigs with a brass contact ring on the cap itself. Another ring on the tube, when they contact they open the same circuit, alas, no chime.
I'm not sure how to do the "reverse" circuit or whatever it's called but it can be done.
You could buy a sealed battery pack or project box and mount it all under the bed along with the chime/buzzer.
Crazy thing, I saw one pickup with a key-lock fuel door. I would NEVER do that. They'll tear up the body of the truck getting the door open. Lose 30 or 50 bucks of fuel, incur a 200+ buck body repair job. Same thing with the locking caps, I'll take my chances. But that's just MY opinion.
I'm also interested in getting a locking gas cap for my 2005 SD with 5.4 engine. Two dealers claimed Ford (Motorcraft) doesn't make them for my truck. At Wal-Mart, I saw Stant brand listed for '03 year (the Stant catalog only went up to 2003) and Fram brand for '04 year (there catalog only went up to 2004). The Stant catalog referenced only the screw-on type while the Fram brand catalog referenced threaded and non-threaded filler tube models (WM only had the threaded model in stock). RockAuto.com listed two models of the MotorCraft brand: FC935 for screw-on and FC1004 for " 1/8" turn style w/ snap-in tether"; both priced at over $25.00.
From what I can tell, my truck apparently has the "non-threaded" filler tube as the stock cap takes only a slight turn to secure it with no "clicks" (though there is a partial "thread" on the filler tube). Anybody know what I should be looking for and where? I'd just as soon get the cheaper (than MotorCraft) Fram if I can find the non-threaded model (which Stant apparently-at least as of 2003- doesn't make). Thanks for any help .
My 04 PSD takes the same cap as my 88 Bronco. They don't change part #'s on these very often, so I'm pretty sure the 03 listing will probably be the right cap. Are there threads that look like ribs on your cap? If so the Stant # 10501 (501) is the cap, just take your cap into Walmart, and compare. The only difference will be the key slot.
