i am a die hard ford fan , but im looking for my first diesel and i need to know which one is is better al l around chevy 6.2 or 6.5 or ford 6.9 or 7.3 obviously only talking about the older diesels. you can find much more info on the chevy motors and i like that they use the same bolt pattern as the 350, please somebody give me good reasons not to buy a chevy
well the 6.2 chebbie from my own use was junk. it had very little power the bottom end was a little weak and the transmission went out every 30,000 miles like clockwork. and stay far away form the chevy diesel made from the sb 350 it is about as durable as a potato chip.
Theres no question that Fords 6.9 or 7.3 were way better motors then Chevies 6.2 or 6.5. A 7.3 powerstroke is definitly what you want which Ford had from mid 94 to 2003. Heres a question for you do you see any old 6.2s or 6.5s still being used yet. Nope not many they could not hold a candle to Fords 6.9 or 7.3 in power or relaibility. Chevy has the worst diesel history vs Ford or Dodge. And now the duramax who noes about that. The jury is still out.Ford all the way here forget GM.
i would have to agree stay away from a chevy diesel we just put a 6.5l turbo diesel togeather a compleat rebuld and it lasted a total of 40 000 miles and everthing was changed from crank to heads and there she sits dead again now my ford diesel is still going strong and she has just a lil under 400 000 k i thinks is has 392 836 and she still is a turn key machine.
GO FORD DIESEL AND NEVER LOOK BACK
actually i see more 6.2's for sale than the 6.9 in my area , but they might be just wanting to get rid of the chevy ......i have a chance to buy an 85 3/4 p/u 2wd with 6.9 for 400 dollars but it wont start ,not getting fuel to injector pump could this just be a simple fuel pump or ?
Could be as simple as a clogged filter, could be as simple as the water seperator is sucking air, could be as simple as the fuel pickup is broken off in the fuel tank, could be as simple as an air leak in a suction line from the tank.
I would check all the above before I even looked at the lift pump.
If you're talking about non-powerstroke then go for the 6.9 before the 7.3
Either one though is a far better choice then those early Chevy diesels. Any mechanic will tell you what turds they are. Or previous owners for that matter.
Most 6.5s Ive seen have been completly rebuilt or a totally new motor. There history has been terrible. 20 years of junk. Diesel has not been there specialty. I am still not sold on the duramax. I have yet to see a high mileage one yet that has not had problems. GM has sold lots off repairs for those engines so its been a money maker for the service departments. I think GMs motto is build em cheap sell parts an keep selling new trucks.
I had a cpl 6.9's and been around alot of 6.9 and 7.3 fords not much power compared to the strokers but good solid engines that will run forever chevey 6.2 and 6.5 just never lived up to anyones expectations so if you can get a ford or a dodge dont like the dodges but they do have a good engine had a 96 loved the engine hated the truck I used to say i bought a cummins that happened to come with a dodge
There is one area where the early GM diesels have a decided advantage over the Fords. They make great anchors if you have a large ship or yacht....it is like a rock after all.
Boy, I love my 7.3 and think it would pull most 6.2's all over the place, but I have a buddy w/a 6.2 and he gets 20 mpg (honestly) but complains of the lack of power. I have to say 7.3 is the best motor for the money.
If it was between the ford motors there is no doubt the 7.3 is better. More power and ford/international had alot of the problems of the 6.9 worked out by the time the 7.3 rolled in.
I have a buddy who has a 92 3/4 ton chebbie w/ a 6.5 Turbodiesel. It has oil spread all over the engine compartment just like every other 6.5 he was looking at buying. When the motor finally revs up in nuetral a nice pretty puff of blue smoke rolls out the pipe.
During a 0-60 contest w/ stop watches my 7.3 NA shifting through 5 gears went to 60 in 12 seconds w/ no 'pane and after barking the tires at takeoff.
The chevy 6.5 TURBO diesel with an AUTOMATIC went to 60 in 16 seconds. The chevy is 3 years newer w/ a turbo and 200,000mles. The ford has 220,000 miles and about 150,000 of those miles had a gooseneck riding along.
The 7.3 only sports 10 more HP than the 6.9 and, in my humble opinion, the 7.3's problem with cavitation and broken valves are far more serious than the 6.9 blowing a headgasket every couple of hundred thousand miles or burning a quart of oil every thousand.
