Unhappy Service engine soon light

Hi, just want to let off some steam...So, I have a 2001 F-150;. with about 90,000 miles on it (used it to move us up from the Bay Area.) Anyway! The "Service Engine Soon Light" came on...so being a good truck owner, I take it in for service. They run a diagnostics check and found out it was the EGR valve that had failed. It also needed a tune-up, so I told them to "go ahead". It came to $562.(mostly for labor). I get my truck back, decide to go for a little drive, the dog-gone light comes on again. I take it back. They had my truck for about 2 hours and they returned it to me.(telling me it was fixed) I start out again for that "little drive" and once again, the "Service Engine Soon" light comes on again. So, lucky me, I get to take my truck BACK IN AGAIN tomorrow...nice way to start the week off.-..hopefully, they will be able to find out why the light keeps coming on. Oh I forgot to mention this, the light seems to come on only after you go over 40 m.p.h. .
Anyone else have this happen?

Get the exact code.

It's likely a P0401, which if you SEARCH for it, is one of the most common EGR-related code.

Steve

PS. EGR valves seldom fail. You likely got screwed by an inexperienced technician. Doesn't it feel good to pay for someone else's kid's education?

Thanks for the response, Steve. I am looking on my repair invoice it says,
"Diag. Check-found Code 0401-EGR valve"-Next it says, " Labor to install valve and clean ports....then the tune-up. All that plus the labor came to $562.
Unfortunately, my better-half is out of town when this happens.....

Well, I took the darned thing back this morning for them to fix it. They told me they think it is a sensor, because it seems to be running smoothly, and now is Not showing up as the "0401"code. Just the doggone light keeps coming on. They are supposed to be delivering it back to my house this afternoon...I'll keep you posted

The most common cause of a P0401 is a bad DPFE sensor.

Wink

Thanks for all the feedback, folks. I got the truck back yesterday afternoon, and she's running smooth. When they dropped it off, I asked if I was going to have anymore trouble, they told me I shouldn't. I drove her to pick
up my better-half from the airport, with no incidents(thank goodness). The light is off, and everything seems to be back to normal. Once again, thanks for everyones help.
