I have a 1996 F150 six 4.9 2wd standard shift. I had an overheating problem and replaced the radiator and fan clutch. This solved the problem, but, the temperature gauge stopped working after the motor overheated. I replaced the sensor on the front of the motor. This didn't work. I checked the wires also. A neighbor told me there was a different sensor for the gauge but I couldn't find it. Does anyone know if this is true or is it maybe the gauge itself? I certainly appreciate any suggestions. Thanks! Ed
There is an engine coolant temperature SENSOR that tells the computer things. I'm pretty sure you don't want to ground that out and it's right up front on an I6. Mine was about $16 and it has 2 wires plugged in to it. The temperature guage sending unit goes for about $4 and only has 1 wire (I think) and is locatedon the right rear of the motor under the exhaust manifold (I think). I just bought it today and have not installed it.
The one you replaced is part of the emission system. The temp sensor is on the passenger side under the exhaust manifold at the back of the engine. Has one wire on it. This is your likely problem.
The engine coolant temp. sensor that cheryl is talking about has two wires... this one is for the computer... The temp sensor that Holmes is talking about has only one wire (this is the one that goes to your guage). You can test this guage by disconnecting the wire... turn your key to the on position... the guage should drop down the COLD... watch the guage and have someone else ground that wire with a jumper... the guage should make its way up to HOT... Don't ground out the wire for too long.
