Timing question on 302 EFI

Hello, I have a 1986 (I posted in the other forum too, but more EFI people in this one) F150 with a 302 EFI in it. I'm wondering about the timing/total timing and how to set it. With the little plug still installed, the truck has 26 degrees of advance at idle and only about 28-29 total, up to 3700 rpms anyways. With the plug out, I have 11 degrees at idle and the total doesn't change with rpm. Ok, I know that 302's, like most sbf's, like 34-38 degrees of total timing. How can I increase my total timing about 6-10 degrees without turning the advance up that much? Oh yeah, the truck has a distributor out of a 1991 F150 if that makes any difference.

I would gradually advance the timing until you hear it start to ping, then turn the distributor back a degree or two. I've had good luck setting the timing on my truck using this method. Usually it's around 12° with the SPOUT connector out. I would compare the reluctor (toothed wheel inside distributor) to see if there is any difference between the two. I think they should be the same, but if there is any difference I would run the one out of your '86.
