Last week in full view of shoppers at a grocery store three scumbags knocked my 68 year old wife down and stole her purse then got away in a van. Due to excellent police work within a half hour the crud and the stolen car were spotted in a motel and arrested. They admitted to the theft. Problem is, the nearly $500.00 in cash was missing when the cops searched the criminals. Purse, credit cards, driver's license , etc were recovered. The crud had no chance to spend any of the money. The only explanation I can think of was the investigating cops took it. Has anyone had a like experience? Others I have told our story to has. How prevalent is this practice?
Sorry to hear about your wife.As to the money there was probably 1 more guy involved, that way the guys who go to jail have the money waiting when they get out in a few hrs. They consider the jail time the price of doing (business).
I definatly wouldnt put it past some police to swipe it. I have known some police and some paramedics, and ambulance drives go so low as to swipe smokes from a car that a man died in, some people it doesnt seem to matter what profession they are in, they cant seem to act human.
I wouldn't go blaming the cops right off the bat if I were you. Half an hour is plenty of time, and since the police would have had little proof that the money had belonged to your wife anyway, they probably would have had to give it back to the guys anyway, or kept it as evidence. I wouldn't trust a criminal over a cop, especially a criminal that would assault a 68 year old woman. It's unfortunate she didn't have a taser or something, or a large, poisonous snake hidden in her purse...
More than likely that $500 went up their nose, in their arm, or they smoked it on the ride to the hotel. It doesn't take scum long to buy drugs. I hope that your wife is OK.

They are guilty of "excellent police work", but you suspect they are thieves. A half hour is not enough time to do something with the money? I hope your wife is OK.
Dono
Carry a gun and shoot the jag-off's in their tracks. Anybody who's coward enough to ****** a purse off an elderly woman who can't defend herself, needs to be shot.
Hope your wife's okay, and hope you get the money back.
I hope your wife is okay. The same thing happened to my grandmother's neighbor, who's about 60. She chased the trash down the street until they finally got away. Nobody helped her. Nothing was recovered, either.
Were you carrying, and were you with her when it happened?
Thanks for your comments and concern. The wife is OK now. She had headaches for a few days from hitting her head on the ground and the bruises from being swiped with the wheel are fading. She was lucky. No, I wasn't there or the crud wouldn't of picked on her. They are cowards. They had just come out of a Radio Shack after trying to use another stolen credit card. She was at the wrong place at the wrong time. She doesn't like me going shopping with her because I want to get what we need and get back home. She can shop for hours, maybe not even buying anything. I think you guys can understand. We know that was too much money to be carrying but she goes to the bank about every 6 weeks for cash and hadn't put in the safe yet. I know a party that had a gun, not used in a crime, but was confiscated by the same police dept. After being notified he could retrieve it he was told they couldn't find it when he went to pick it up. After nearly two months he got it back with no explanation of where it was. I have not accused anyone of stealing the cash but insinuated it and ask if anyone had an experience of a sticky fingered cop. The explanations of where the cash could of gone were pretty lame, like they didn't search everyone found in the room with the actual thieves. At the time they couldn't of known which ones were the actual ones that stole the purse. They bought gas. I know gas is expensive but how much can a small van hold? It's good that some of you can have blind faith in your police but you have to see the system from the inside to see reality. Who wouldn't trust their priest or pastor but we have seen that they can go bad also. An article in todays paper covers a pastor that stole over $60,000 from his church. This isn't a perfect world........I have been after her for years to carry and yes, she will now be carrying protection. No, not in her purse either. Any future cowards are going to get a surprise from this little ol' lady.
Boy, Jerry, I didn't realize she was hit by their van! That's what you mean by "being swiped with the wheel," right? Real glad to hear she's okay. Also glad to hear that she'll be protecting herself. It's mandatory open carry in AZ, right?
I'm really glad she's okay. People like that disgust me to no end. A couple years back when I was about 19, I was at the mall one evening and noticed suspicious guy had followed me from one store to another. I was by myself so I kind of kept an eye out for him. When I went to leave I didn't see him any more and thought I was by myself walking to my truck. Well then I saw the same guy out of the corner of my eye trailing behind my. It really freaked me out so I got my keys ready (the one to unlock the door between my thumb and pointer and rest lined up between my knuckles) and made a b-line for the ford. Well I don't think he expected me to go to the truck or he saw me line out my keys, because he backed off a little and after I got in my truck I saw him make a loop behind my truck through the parking lot and back to the mall. I was so creeped out by it and shocked that I just drove off and got the heck out of there. I really wish I would have came to my senses and went and found security or some thing. After I relaxed a little I became so furious that some one would stoop that low.
I have no doubt he had bad intentions for me. I'm really glad I was paying attention to my surroundings that night.
After that I realized being an independant woman in this day and age is not as safe as it appears. I'm now 21 and I have my concealed weapons permit.
