Last night I had the opportunity to drive my in-laws new 2005 Ford Five Hundered with the 3.0 engine. I found it OK for open trafffic, like country roads. But in tight traffice or city traffic I found it a fast snail in comparison to my F-150 with the 5.4 engine. Those that like the Five Hundred as a sedan I suggest you drive it as much as the Dealer will allow before you make your decision.
was it one with the conventional automatic, or one of those cvt's
My mother bought herself a non s mini with a cvt, I have been able to drive it on occasion and that tranny just sucks the life out of the engine. Her 4cyl honda accord with a auto was better when it came to around town drive. That mini is still a pleasure in the hills though.

You may smile, but I do not know what a cvt is. I do know the shifter was at mid seat and you put it in whatever gear you selected and it reamined there until you hand shifted it. i.e. To go forward you put it in "D" and left it there and it went through the progressive stages of gears.
The only one i've ever used was in my mom's car though. The charachtristic of it seems to be that it is too busy deciding what the proper gear ratio would to let the engine do it's job. It doesnt kick down.. it kinda.. slowly revs while the tranny decides what ratio to be in while still putting power to the ground. I dunno, it just don't seem right.
I'll take the 3 speed c6 in my truck anyday, but then again, with 7 litters rather than 1.8, every gear is the right gear.
