Question Ford 9 inch

I was wondering if all year third members are interchagable? I have a 78 F-150 with 31 spline axles.
Thanks,
Bob

yes, as long as the spline count is correct. I'm not sure if any had different sized yokes though. Of course, there are some to avoid.

73-79 Ford 9"s all have the same 31 spline, but the 73-78 have the 1310 yoke and the 79 has the 1330 yoke size, so you would need to match up yokes.

The 9" axles in cars came with the 28 spline.

early broncos had 28 spines too.
I pulled a 3rd member out of an 84, I think that was one of the last years they were in trucks.

i think f100's had the 28 spline too, atleast my 70 does. Otherwise they are all interchangable, the only difference i have seen besides the spine count, is the 1970 and earlier had a little smaller carrier bearing, otherwise they are close to identical.

I thought they would of had 28 splines on a F-100 to, but people have said their F-100(with Ford 9") have 31 splines on the 73-79 trucks. I want to say my F-100 with D44 has 28 splines which sucks, but at the same time I think it has 30 I don't remember right now.
