:7 I'm getting a new cab for my 78 f-250, new to me at least and much much better body condition. The only thing that needs work is the typical rusted floor boards. I'm planning to take the old cab off and clean up the frame and everything underneath. Before I do this, does anyone have any suggestions, tips or helpful hints that I should take care of before I get into this???
I just replaced the cab on my f-350, the first thing i would tell you to do after you pull the front clip is to pull the engine and tranny ( makes pulling the chassis out alot easier) Built a wodden Box frame that measued 8' X 3' and supported the Corners with Cement blocks (2 together alternating direction) had to take the bottom of the wooden frame to 46 inches to clear the engine. (sacry top heavy at that hight) Drop me a line if you need nore info. where are you located??
I just replaced the cab on my 76 f-150 with one from a 79 f-150. I didn't pull any of my drivetrain out though. The wiring was the only problem. I also cleaned up the frame and painted it all gloss black.
Is the new cab the same year??? (that's where my wiring problem came in)
I am also planning on doing that in the near future and wondered what is the best way to lift the cab off? Use 3 buddies or is there a mechanical means that works best?
once the cab is stripped it is not that heavy. I did mine with 2 others helping so i would have to say go get some beer and a couple Rotary Lift stickers and go to it
To do it legally you will need to have the completed truck inspected by the State Highway Patrol. They will issue you a new VIN and a self assembled title. You will need reciepts for any parts you install and the vin from the vehicles that they came from. If you got the parts from a private party I'm pretty sure you will need an affidavit from them. E-mail me if you need more info on this. I have a list of inspection locations and their phone #'s around the state and can give a little heads up on which ones are easier to deal with. BTW I live in Reynoldsburg.
To lift the front, I took a piece of 2 1/16" drill pipe and welded a piece of 1/4x3" plate on each end. This bolts to the bracket that bolts the front fender/splash panel to the firewall. I picked this end up with the engine pick.
For the rear, I welded a 1 1/2" angle on top of a 2" angle to make a "F" (layed on its side) shaped piece. The bottom flange of the cab goes between the "F." There is a welded eye bolt on each end that is picked up with a come-along hanging from a truss.
