Chris Adams post may hold the fix for you.
Hope this helps.
"I removed the cupholder-ashtray . Remove two 10 mm screws, then struggle to pull it out."
Am I correct in believing that you pull the radio trim off to get at the 10mm screws?
Anyone got a simple, but functional idea what to do with the space that would remain if one pulled the cupholder-ashtray and cigarrette lighter?

On the trucks with the storage space, that would be a cool place to mount something like a DVD.
Two low down for gauges, though, at least the storage space is.
I sometime use the drink holder, or I would put something in there..

"Several guys have put head units in that space. On my truck I have the airbag disable in there and so it wouldn't work out well. I have added a door lock switch, and the red LED for the Alarm."
Being a Navy guy I am not sure having a head in the middle of the dash would be acceptable to my passenger
. I do know what you mean. I am satisfied with my 6-DVD stock player, so more music goodies is not a must.
I too added an alarm system. I was hestant as previously on my '93 the alarm company installed my flashing red light where the steering assembly blocked its view from the passenger side. I had to rewire a second red flasshing light to the passendger side of the steering column. On my '93 it had to be wired paralell (loop) to get it to work. On my current '04 the alarm came with a small but magnified lens blue light that lights up approx ¾ of the cab with each flash. Add this to the key code red flashing light and most thieves will be warned away.
How about an ATM machine where the ash tray goes? Would save trips to the bank.
I put in the Ford Deluxe Alarm/Keyless, and the red light is about right, not too bright, but noticable if you look in the window.
The lock switch is a regular 2004 F150 drivers door lock switch, as my STX didn't come with locks.
Yeah, my typing has a lot of typos, lately, but it will get better when I get the thingie that holds my fingers together off.
