I have a 1978 F-150 Ranger with dual tanks. I only use the main tank because the aux. one's gas cap wont open. every time i fill up the guage reads way over full. how far can it go below empty before it is empty. the tank is 32 gal.
They all vary, It is normal to go way past full when completely full, but mine is bone dry on E. I found out the hard way. That is the only true way to know is to run her till she quits then see what the gauge says.
If your large tank is an oversized replacement tank and not the tank that came with the truck (or that the sending unit is made for) you'll probably find that your gauge will show full or over full until you have about a half a tank of gas left, then it will drop off fast. Check it with your mileage and get a feel for how far you can go on a tank.
my 76 f-250 camper special does that thing ken2600 talked about. It goes way over full and stays there until you burn about half the tank. then it drops off fast. Mine goes quite a bit past E before it runs out, but around E it starts to have Idle issues- dies out at lights and the like. From driving it to bone dry on that tank, I'd say I have about 2-3 gallons after I hit E, ofcoarse I have the AUX tank to get me to the gas station
Does anybody KNOW of a source for a new sending unit that will fit an in cab , 19 gallon fuel tank---in my 77 f250 , hiboy-------I can't seem to find one!!!!fd

Could be the float in sender has a hole. Will still float at times, then when tank emptys some drops like a rock.Pull sender, remove float, shake. Also feel heavy if fuel inside. Many senders replaced due to bad float.Same float fits like 30 years of truck, all senders.Brian
