Ok here is my ? I have a 79 F150 stepside 4x4 (Short Bed) and I am changing the tranny C6 with a tanny out of a 79 Bronco 4x4 C6 they do not have the same spacer between the tranny and the transfer case the spacer out my short bed is about 6"s and the one out of the Bronco is about 8 3/4"s are the spacer's interchangeable or am I wasting my time???
Any help is very much appreciated. I love this site it rules!!!! Thanks again!!
Jody, the spacers are interchangable but you will need to swap the output shaft from the tranny as well. This requires complete disassembly of the transmission to get the shaft out and to install it in the new tranny. If you're not comfortable doing it yourself you could take it to a tranny shop and probably have it done for $60-$100, it shouldn't be more than an hour long job for someone who knows what they're doing. If you use the longer adapter from the Bronco in your truck you'll need to move the crossmember and mounts for the t-case as well as lengthen the front and shorten the rear driveshaft.
Thanks for the info ivanribic! Will it be hard to move the crossmember and mount for the transfercase or should I just do the tranny? Not sure I want to get into the tranny that deep! Thanks again for the info.
Personally I'd much rather swap the shafts out of the trannys. Far less work and expense because you'd have to have the drivelines done at a shop anyway. I had to do it on my truck. I'd never gotten into an automatic of any kind before but it really wasn't that tough. I tore apart the old tranny first to get the shaft out and get an idea of what it would take. Once I got that the other tranny was a breeze. There's just some little stuff you have to pay close attention to when reassembling so you don't mess it up. Otherwise, like I mentioned earlier, it would be something any good tranny shop can do very fast for you if you take both trannsmissions in there. You might call around and get a price on it but I wouldn't expect to pay over $100.
