no spark

Im not getting any spark. My truck is a 63 223I6 and shes not starting. I tested for spark at ignition wire coming from the coil and it didnt have spark, so I thought replace the coil and that will fix it but it didnt. i know the battery is good I think the starter relay is good(it turns over just fine but doesnt fire). Ive replaced the points, condenser, plugs and wires all wthin the last couple of months. Where should I look next the ignition switch? I need some help.

Thanks,
Nick

Do you have voltage at the battery side of the coil when the switch is on? If not you may have a bad switch or faulty wire. Check by jumping from the battery to the coil and then engaging the starter. If it starts, then you will need to trace the wire back to the switch to see where you are losing the signal. BTW, if it does start, you will have to remove your jumper wire to stop it.

rider, I tried jumping strait from the battery to the coil and starting it but still no spark. Does this mean the problem is my coil, its pretty new but I left it hooked directly to the battery for a bit and it got hot to the touch which could have ruined it. This has really got me stumped and it almost has to be something simple that im just not seeing.

If you ran a hotwire to the coil and still have no spark, it sounds like the coil. BUT, check the lead from the coil to the distributer, I've had them go bad.

I agree with Mike. There is not a whole lot that can go wrong and it sounds like you have replaced everything but that one wire. What parts have you replaced since it was last running? Have you checked to make sure the distributer is actually rotating? It is not likely but I guess if replacing that wire does not help I would start looking at mechanical stuff like that. One other issue that I have come upon with my 223 is the rotor sold by napa and others does NOT fit correctly. I had to order an Autolite from an online store to get the correct one. It would help me to know what all you have done since it was last running.

Like re54drider said I would check and see if the distributor is rotating. Take your cap off and turn it over. If it does not turn then you have a failure in th shaft. Or the roll pin has broken. I have had that happen before also. If the pin is broke then check your oil punp it may be jammed. Thats what happened to mine.

I have seen ignition rotors ground out. Check that, too.

I guess im gonna buy a brand new coil and throw it on there to see if that makes a difference, the one im using I stole off of my 65 which im restoring. As far as whats new with since it was running is condenser, points, and plug wires (including ignition wire). Instig8ter when you say ignition rotor are you talking about the rotor cap in the distributor? Thanks for the help guys Ill certainly keep you posted.

Yes, the rotor in the cap. If you crank the motor over with the cap off and hold the coil wire close to the top of the rotor, it should not spark. If it does, the rotor resistance is compromised. I've seen them grounded straight through to the dist shaft.
Usually, you'll see a little burnt spot through the rotor under the spring-steel center contact of the rotor.
