Oil pan removal
Just wondering if there's any precautions I need to take when removing my oil pan. Also wondering what the best way to do it is. I know you have to loosen the pan bolts and let it drop down to the axle and then remove the oil pump bolts and let the oil pump fall down into the pan. I'm replacing the oil pan gasket so I'm assuming I should also replace the oil pump gasket. Should I also check the rear main and is there any way to tell if it's bad or not? My truck is an F150 custom 1976 2wd with a 390 4 barrel and a C6 automatic transmission.
Thanks for any help you can offer.

Drain the oil first.
Seriously, I changed the pan on my 78 f150 4x4 w/ 460/c6 and, to put it mildly, it sucked! Not only was it tight to begin with, It is a front sump pan. If I have to do it again, I'm gonna remove the front axle first.
After it's drained out, remove all the bolts. If the pan can't drop below the pump, and you can't manuver it out, you'll have to remove the pump. The real pain, and I mean REAL PAIN, is getting the damn pump bolted back on and getting the pump axle rod thingy back into place. I would try everything I could to get the pan off without removing the pump. Once the pan is off though, the pump can be replaced easily.
I can't remember if my oil pump even had a gasket. For the pan, there was a seal in front and back, and I used orange gasket stuff for the edges, with no gasket. No leaks in 7 months.
As for the rear seal, If it leaks oil all over the drive, it might be bad. You might be able to slide it around the crank and replace it without too much trouble. I haven't done it myself, but was told it's not that hard.
Hope this helps a little.

Take a hint from a pro...I've changed more pan gaskets than I want to think about, but made a LOT of money doing it. When you're about to drop the pan,....wrap you face up like an arab with cloths and put some Craftsman plastic eye protection on. That way when you drop the pan and the crank is dripping all this slimy goo all over you, it won't bother you.....unless you like engine oil dripping down your back....it'll save you a LOT of headaches!!.... :P
