Identification ford 289
I use a ford 289 in my old truck. Can you help me out here with identification.
The casting number near the starter reads C5AE-6015E. 1965 I suppose but can you tell me what kind of car the engine came from. It's a lot easier for me to get parts if I know some history.
Thanks a lot! I hope you understand most of my Swenglish.Mats Nilsson, Sweden
I'll stick to English now for the benefit of our other users, and because my Swedish is nowhere near as good as your English!
Unfortunately, we can't tell from the casting number alone what vehicle that engine originally came in. Yes, the first 2 digits, C5, stand for 1965, the A stands for the Ford Galaxie, but that's the car that the small block Ford engine was originally designed for, not necessarily the exact car that your engine came in. The E stands for the engine department of Ford Engineering. The next group of digits, 6015, is the number that tells us the part is an engine block (as if we couldn't tell that by looking at it!) I think the second E, the one after the block number, denotes a design change. Does your 289 have 5 bolts that hold the engine to the bellhousing, or transmission, or does it have 6?

It have 6 bolts. I found a small sign next to the casting numbers. It reads 7E4 and it's attatched to the engine block with two small screws.
The casting number on the tranny ( C4) are C6
AP-T0027-C.Thanks a lot!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately, the casting number and date codes still don't tell us what vehicle the engine originally came in. That information was on a small metal tag that was attached to the top of the engine, held on by one of the coil bolts. I'd be surprised if that tag is still there.
Does your engine still use the factory intake manifold, and is it 2-barrel or 4-barrel ?
The transmission numbers don't really help us either.
But as for getting parts, in 1967 the 289 was available in several different vehicles with very few changes between them. If you said that it came from a '67 Mustang, that would probably get you the right parts.
