Toyota timing belt

Question on a timing belt on Toyota 22R (2.4L carborated).

I was doing a head gasket and decided to change the timing belt. I first put the timing belt on than went to put the tensioner on and could not get it on. I than unbolted the head, picked up the rear of the head(dropping the front). I installed the tensioner and than the timing chain to the cam. I than pushed down on the rear of the head and bolted it on. The timing chain is really tight and the ruber tensioner is pushed in about 1/4 inch from the chain putting pressure on it. If I loosten the bolt on the cam that holds the timing gear it sometimes starts to fall forward (I am guessing because it is so tight).

Is being this tight normal? Will the chain streatch (and everything be fine) when I start the motor?

I tend to know just enough to be dangerout at times.

Thank you

Chain, right?

Unless there is enough slack with the tensioner off, I would think you would put the chain on the sprockets and slide the sprockets on the shafts together. This is the way with a pushrod motor set up, but with an ohc it may not be necessary.

You should not have to be tilting the head down to get the chain on.

Ya got a book?

Chain yes.
Book yes.

I tried the way the book said and I just couldn't get the tensioner on. I originally did it like the book said and it worked all the way up untill installing the tensioner.

1. install chain on crank with bright link lining up with dot on gear.
2. install chain on cam sprocket with bright link lining up with dot on gear.
3. install pass side guide rail.
4. install driver side guide rail.
5. compress tensioner and install. (No mater how much I compressed the tensioner the bolt hold would not line up hence why I took it appart installed the tensioner and did it the way I mentioned earlier)

The book did mention turning the cam counterclockwise a bit but I was unable to do that.
