I am sure this has been coverd before and I ran a search and did not find the wright info, so sorry for a repeat. Can someone explain what it takes to change out the ball joints for a 250 HD 4x4. My Chiltons book says dont' bother since it takes special tolls. Can this be done at home? or are we just stuck with the high labor rates.
Hello Bill, Thanks for the email. Sorry I can not respond, I have not been a member long enough for the time period. Please send the file. Thanks Fellows.
I changed them out myself. I did not need any special tool just the standard tools needed to remove balljoints and a bigger hammer. The problem I had was replacing the outer axle shaft knuckle seal. I ended up using a piece of sked 40 pvc pipe with on od the size of the seal. I still had some difficulty getting the seal on so it took it to a dealer, they used the same piece of pvc but knock the snot out of it. I was a little worried about using that much force but that is what it took.
When I replaced my wheel bearings I had the same problem. I actualy rolled the fisrt seal. Come to find out The dealer sold the wrong one. I evently had them install the seal. I figured for the cost of the seal, if they messed it up I was only out the cost of one and not two.
