Cool Reconditioned 460 engine

With my 460ci engine the extracters are glowing red on 3-4-7-8, all rear four pistons, it has a new 670cfm Holley street avenger carb on it. I took it for a drive around the block and was lucky to make it back, the engine was coughing & spulttering.... could the timing be way out, can any-one help. Thanks. Jamie, Australia.

Timing! And don't trust the timing marks on the vibration damper unless you have verified that they are okay. Run the engine to TDC by measuring piston travel (both valves closed). Then have a look at the timing pointer. Does it show TDC on the vibration damper? Disconnect the vacuum line to the distributor. Start the engine and let it idle, using a timing light, increase the RPM a bit and see if the timing mark moves (centrifugal advance). Apply vacuum to the hose you pulled off the carburetor and check for movement of the timing mark (vacuum advance). If the centrifugal advance, vacuum advance and damper marks are in order back off the initial advance until the engine runs properly. Don't drive it like it is you could do serious damage. Next likely culprit is a vacuum leak causing a extreme lean condition on the rearmost cylinders.

Sounds to me like a big bad vacuum leak.
