Someone at a trade show display told me that I could have my tuner set up for an "engine brake" on the 6.0. What was they talking about? I have seen some posts that say there is a wire somewhere that can be hooked up to use as a retarder. Anyone have any info or links for this info?
I think Ford is already doing it to a degree in Tow/Haul mode. A few weekends ago while driving solo and running AutoEnginuity I was monitoring VGT (variable geometry turbo) duty cycle among other things. I would engage T/H while going down some steep grades and when I tapped the brakes I would get the downshift and happened to notice the duty cycle of the VGT went up to +70% IIRC.
Yes they (your tuner) can make a tune that will act like an engine brake. It is not a true engine brake but will give the same results. I wish I could remember the terminalogy... Essentially there is a "valve" (for lack of the real word) that it will close and help slow the motor/truck. I know it was possible on the 7.3 and possibly the 6.0 to build a cheap engine brake but I can't remember the exact directions or where they are.
EBPV, it just increases backpressure for assisting with cold weather warm up. As for that wire, with a manual i beleive you just energize it and the valve would close, giving the engine high backpressure, slowing it down, and with an automatic, you would need to intercept the wire, split into it so when ever you would turn on your jake brake, it would engage the lockup so it would be effective.
There is no Exhaust Backpressure Valve (EBPV) on the 6.0 as there is on the 7.3. The turbocharger itself is capable of building the needed backpressure to slow the truck.
