Fixer Upper/Daily Driver

Hay I`ve got a question. I have a 1986 F-150 4x2 with the a EFI 302 "non HO block " and automatic with overdrive. My question is I want more power but like every body else I am on a buget, plus it is a daily driver. Id like to keep the engine size to a 302 because of gas prices and I would like to keep it fuel injected but the air densited injection system does not leave many options. The truck also has smog control witch I hate with a passion but don`t know how to remove it with out messing something up. After I have said all that I have one more question. I know the truck is old I want to know is rare to put 300,000 miles on a 302? It does not burn any oil but it has a slight tapping sound on the front right side of the engine. The sound gets real loud at about 1,900 RPMs. Makes me think someone dropped a penny or something in the engine.

Tapping is probably dirt in a lifter. Pretty common, and usually dosn't hurt anything too bad. A can of seafoam or marvel mystery oil will sometimes clear them up.

putting a different exhaust would probably be a good power improvement. I still have to pass emissions/inspection with my 86 where I live, so that limits some of what you can do.
