Hello, I must say, I really like this board and all the info, knowledge and comaradier( spelling?) of it's members.
Here's the situation. E4OD went out on my 93 Ford Flareside 4x4.
1) A used tranny, with supposedly 59,000 miles is $900, but it has been aprox. 3 weeks and the salavage yard says it hasn't arrived yet, coming from a yard in New York. Getting a little pissed, no way it should take that long to get to Michigan.
2) A reman averages 1800 plus around 500 core.
3) I have an opportunity to buy a 1994 Ford F250 4x4, 5.8L, ZF 5 speed for $2400, it has around 130000 miles on it. I wouldn't mind putting the manual trans in my Flareside, It's it tough to change to a manual trans?
So what would you guys do. I'm leaning for the F250, don't really trust Fords E4OD, plus who knows maybe swap out suspension parts and have a 1993 F250 Flareside 4x4.
Let me know what you guys think,
Thanks,
Shiny
Going with a donor truck is definitely the right way to go, but my guess is that you can probably find a cheaper truck to work with, since it will be pretty much junk by the time you're done with it unless you part it out.
You will need to worry about two things - driveshaft length, both front & rear. They will be different. Your computer will need to be swapped out for one that matches your engine/tranny combination.
In my opinion i would go with a reman. You take your chances with a junkyard tranny, My own 93 E40D is almost done my truck has next to no go to it and it doesnt wwant to downshift and it slips at high speeds and ive been looking into the same possibilities. The 2nd truck is a pretty nice idea too but you should consider all the time its gonna take to convert all that stuff over. its the smaller parts like clutch pedal and speedo cables and stuff that really add up. With a reman old tranny comes out new one goes in and you have warrenty.
