351M vs 351W

I know this is a swap question, but I'm in trouble and I need expert help FAST!

I just got a call from my installer. I took him a 1980 F350 with a "new" 351M motor in it. I gave him my 1990 F350 with a bad 351W (5.8L) EFI motor.

I "thought" I had it straight in my mind from advice from here that the engines would swap, with only a change of the intakes & flywheel. I told him to go ahead.

He just called me and said the EFI intake from the 1990 will not bolt onto the 351M motor.

Could someone PLEASE set me straight once-and-for-all. I went ahead and bought this motor myself instead of relying on someone to procure one for me because I wanted to be absolutely sure that I had a good motor. Now it seems I've wasted my money.

Please help!

Unfortunately you've hit a major roadblock to the engine swap and it's not the only 1 either. Not only will the intakes not interchange but the bellhousing bolt patterns are completely different. This is not a "bolt in" swap unless you change the bellhousing/transmission as well and you're still not going to be able to put the EFI system on the 351M. You'd have been much better off finding a junkyard 351W

Thanx, Bill. Yes, that's what I did. They are delivering it on Monday. It cost me $400. It has 95,000 miles on it. I hope it is solid.

i'd do the timing chain and oil pump minimum while it's out, probably the bearings and rear main too. if you were to pull the heads to do the rings it'll likely need a bore to go back together. you can compression test the engine before it goes in to find out if it is OK to go in, if it doesn't check out looks like you're doing the whole engine? but better to find out before it goes in.
