I've been looking at Expiditions off and on for a couple years and finally just picked up an '01 EB less than a week ago. Is the mileage computer in these things really accurate? I've only driven it about 60 miles around town and it's reporting 8.5 MPG. I was expecting around 12.
I have not checked this yet by topping off and calculating on my own. I was just wondering if the milage computer was really all that accurate.
If this is right, any ideas why it's so low? I've done the basics, changed oil, new filters. Everything on it is stock at the moment.
sounds too low. have you been standing on the accelorator?
Not at all. I've been taking it very easy on it just getting used to how it drives. This thing's a beast compared to what I've had the last 10-15 years. Oh, and I did re-set the MPG calculator when I got it too.
i don't have one of them fancy computers in my truck, but i'm assuming it's not accurate. most peeps on this site seem to get between 11-15 aroung town (i get 11-12).
Oh, and I did re-set the MPG calculator when I got it too.

not to worry, then. It will take a number of miles or driving cycles for it to show an accurate number. i want to say its miles. I just did mine after disconnecting the battery and it took about 500 miles for it to show what it did before the disconnect.
My 2001 4x4 5.4 L gets about 13mpg around 65% city 35% highway summer driving. The computer has been within 1/2 mpg either way over 10 of my manual calculations. I believe it is reasonably accurate.
Mine is pretty close when used through out 3/4 of a tank. Not to accurate right after being reset unless I am steady state driving. I have a 4x4 5.4 and get around 12.5 city on 285/75/16 tires and arounf 16 highway and 11 witha 3500 pound boat. Do the math when you fill up and see if it is really 8.5 if it is look into O2 sensors, possible bad Cat Converter ot EGR system problems. Good luck let us know what turns up?
I'd disconnect the battery for a while and reset the learning curve of the tranny and the MPG computer, it's currently dialed in on the last owner and needs to start over with the way you drive.
The computer on my 01 EB 4x4 is pretty accurate as far as MPG goes, usually within 0.5 MPG of manual calculations. What I have found not accurate is miles left on tank. The read out gets down to show 10-20 miles left, and I usually have 50-6- left on the tank. Currently, 14.8-15.2 MPG local city, and 16.5-17.0 highway.
It's looking better now. It's been coming up the more I drive. I re-set it again last week and it's showing about 12 mpg average which sounds a little more normal.
I had forgotten that I sat with the truck idleing for an hour or more with the A/C on high the day I got it thumbing through the manual, setting memories, key fobs, etc. It came up steadily the more I drove it.

Like before, after you reset it, it takes some time for it to get to an "accurate" MPG reading. Have fun wit it!
