turbo trouble while towing

When i am pulling my boat on the highway, my turbo seems to cycle on and off. It also makes a fan blowing noise followed by a slight shreeking noise. I have no problems with this when not towing, and the only engine mod that i have is a cold air intake.

Are you sure it's not the fan clutch clicking in & out? I seldom notice mine coming on unless I'm towing.

Welcome to the forum conan777.
What you are describing sounds like turbo stall on the 99-03 models. You can clear that up with a different intake wheel, housing, etc. If you click on "UserCP" in the upper right corner and find where you can fill out your signature, then we can know what kind of truck you have and what,if anything, has been done to it. It makes a big difference what what gets recommended.

thas what it sounds like to me. i also never notice mine unless i am towing. it will engage for a while then dis-engage. if its turbo surge it will be a very rapid puffing sound

I agree that it's likely the fan clutch and nothing to worry about. If you could fill out your signature and give us a little info on your truck that would help. However, if you hear a squealing noise, it could be the belt slipping due to more torque to get the fan spinning. Mine started that way and then pretty soon would do it on hot days even empty, but I was still chasing turbo surge. BUT due to the help on this site, I not believe that my belt is slipping causing the squealing, which seems to common on my year of truck. Anyway I would go after the belt first and eliminate that before I'd worry about the turbo. However a new compressor wheel is a good mod if you're looking to do that.

my truck is still under factory warrenty. should i take it to the dealer and descirbe the problem? I also notice the truck surgeing while the fan is cycling. I have 42000 miles on the truck. Could the problem be the wastegate actuator and is their any danger of disconecting it on my model?

I had the same problem. It's the serpentine belt slipping. It cycles off and on about every second. There was a retrofit kit available that included a new pulley and belt. Since you're under warranty, take it to your dealer and tell him that your belt is slipping. They should be able to look up the retro kit. When I had the kit installed, all was back to normal.

I don't know if this is the same problem but here goes:

When towing up hill recently the tranny down shifted to third then of course the RPM's went up. While pulling this hill I started hearing something that sounded like it was coming frrom under the tranny hump. It sounded like something cycling. Sort of a surging sound. It did it two times both times while pulling a hill in third. If I backed off the go pedal a little it stopped.

Thoughts?

Thanks

yeah! MBRP 4'' aluminized turbo back, 5'' polished tip. i have that setup, it was $444 shipped to my door from blackclouddiesel.com, and it just rocks. installation was a breeze, it makes incredible sound (love it ) and it is actually quieter inside the cab with the way i faced the muffler.

With replacing the belt, also check to see if the upper radiator hose goes under of over the belt. If it's under, see if the will put the "over" hose on, that way you don't have to remove the hose in the future to change your belt. Thankfully, my truck already has the "over" hose.

For exhaust, generally, I'd go to 4" as quick as possible in the downpipe and continue that all the way out to a 5' tip. Make sure the 4" pipe goes almost all the way through the tip, otherwise it'll tarnish like silver because of the heat and never come back. I am running a custom 4" SS system from a local muffler shop with an Aeroturbine in it. I love mine too. Doesn't seem to help things stay cool on the highway, but at idle, it cools down a lot quicker. People say it sounds good, but I am always driving and have never heard it. Also if you have to do emmisions testing in your area, make sure you leave the Cat there. Some shops will do a hi-flow cat where they cut the flanges off and make it 4". Someday I'll be getting a CAT delete pipe, but my cat will remain in tact for when/if I need it. At $900 to replace, I better keep it around.

Hey guys, I'm so glad I found this forum, finally a group of people that actually know what they are talking about.

I just used my 2001 7.3L Excursion 2WD to pull an RV Trailer from Houston to Jacksonville and back this weekend. I have the Hypertech Programmer set on Tow-Safe and the RV weighed about 6,000 lbs loaded. I had another 2,000 lbs cargo and people in the truck.

I noticed that when I would be going up a hill or trying to pass someone and the RPM's hit 3,000 I would hear a tinging sound almost like chains dragging on a trailer. Any thoughts on what that might be?

My fear is that the turbo is making the sound because I only heard it under a hard accelleration.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Joshua
