Clutch replacement question

OK I know this may sound like a stupid question to some, but none the less I will continue. I am in the midst of starting my clutch replacment on my 78 F150 4x4, after taking a good long look at what lies before me I had this one question. Is it possible to slide the tranny back far enough to be able to do everything I need to do without actually removeing the trans. I already know I will have to remove the transfer case and a few other things. Again I know this may seem like a stupid question but it is my first time doing a clutch on anything like this. Any help you guys can give will be much appreciated.

Trust me...

I’ll let you in on the way I do clutches in vehicles that have removable floor pans. This sounds goofy, but once you’ve done it this way, you’ll always do it this way. Take out the passenger seat & bring in an engine hoist with a sling through the passenger door & down the opening in the trans tunnel. Leave the tranny & transfer case together & loop the sling between them. Take them both out as one unit. Pull them backward as far as you can & let them down on a floor jack & slide it out of the way. It's cramped enough under there without adding to it. That’s easy, but where this method really shines is in the re-assembly. Put the two back in together. Having the sling as a pivot point makes stabbing the trans a piece of cake. It is well worth renting a hoist if you don’t have one.

Well heres the way i doit. i have a 66 f-100 4wd with 6in lift. 435np with the t/c married to it. i undo the front and rear drive lines unbolt the from cross member ond then wrap the com-a-long to the rear of the truck and also around the trany and t/c then pull it back about a foot. then the clutch is just sitting there and i remove. when i install it i just bench pres the trany and t/c back up in there. you might need a little help getting it back in there just right. the reason i do it this way is because its to tall to use my tranny jack and my cross member is still riveted on there from the factory. it takes me about 4 hours total to complete the whole thing. i hope this helps any questions just e-mail me

No offense, but...

GOOD LORD MAN! Are you a 350lb gorilla!? I’ve done a few 4spds including a cast iron wedge in a Road Runner by myself & I didn’t like doing any of them. The RR I did in the back yard in the dirt. Oh yeah, it can be done. I was also 17 at the time. I just pulled the tranny & t/c out of my Super Duty yesterday to fix the clutch. I couldn’t use a hoist though, the hole in the floor board is only about 8” square. I had to take the t/c out first because it & the tranny measure 56”. Then I made up a fixture to bolt to the bottom of the tranny & to the top of my floor jack. That worked like a charm.

How do you get a bolt started while you bench press the both of them? Any time I’ve done trannies solo, I have it on a floor jack raised up, then I get inside the truck & stab it from there holding the handle. That’s with a NP435 or T-18. Just how old are you? I’m a bit too gray in the face to be doing that. I try to work smarter, not harder.

Well I just finished mine on monday and its a chore. I just let the tranny and t/c sit on the cross member and pick it up and push it forward untill the yoke is right next to the clutch plate. then i just work it upp in there spining the tranny untill it lines up. the reason i do it this way is because my truck is to tall for my tranny jack and my cross member doesnt come out. when i get it close i just use the come-a-long to help slide it. its a 435np with a dana 20 married to it. Im 31, 6'1" and 250lbs. i get a little sore but hey it works and when your alone you make due. took me just over an hour to install it and the clutch. just HAMMER DOWN

Well, you’re a better man than I…or at least a younger one. I just got my tranny stabbed with the help of another old guy and a floor jack. & we decided to do the t/c tomorrow. I think if I had your truck, I’d be cutting some rivets & taking some tires off. The most I ever benched was about 320# when I was in my early twenties. I’m still 6’1” @ 195# but doing that would kill me these days. Well, do it while you’re still young & able.
