I only have about 200 miles on my MSD 6A ignition and it has started to give me grief. I tried several times to contact MSD with no luck. Though I will continue to call them I wanted to see if anyone else has had problems. What's happening is that the engine initially started cutting out occasionaly, then more frequently, then backfiring and cutting out. When I say cut out I mean stop running for an instant then kick back in, created a real jolt when going down the highway. I hooked the original Ford ignition back up and haven't had any problems since. We did have quite a bit of rain the last few days that I have been driving it prior to and during the problems but the engine compartent was dry as were the wires, connections etc... and I am sure that the ignitioin box itself is sealed anyway. Anyone have a similar problem? Thanks!!
My MSD6A has been working fine, I've put about 1500mi on mine. I have read stories of people that receive bad boxes. I'd bug MSD for a warranty replacement...or at least a test of your module.
I put in an Accel 500+ unit and the first time I washed the engine it started dying on me. The part of the box that faced up wasn't totally sealed. It contains the rev limiter adjustment. Any way blew it dry and turned it over and no more problems.
I have used three MSD's for several years with no problems. Be sure to run a good wire for the 12v power lead. I go right to the battery side of the solinoid.
All of this testing problem and replacement is why I use the stock Ford OEM modules. Emergency replacement parts are readily available. The OEM modules are highly reliable, it is the parts store brand replacement modules that go bad. The Aftermarket ignitions are needed when you want to run over 5500 RPM.
